Demoralized Pip has found out that his clear path to being with Estella was imaginary.
It was never Miss Havisham's intent to see them together as adults and she is not his
benefactor. Out of nowhere, the convict from the beginning comes to Pip and tells him that all this time it has been he who has made Pip a gentleman. The Convict, expecting excitement, is instead given disappointment masked by fake enthusiasm. Through this, the convict has become a new but unwanted father figure to Pip because he has been following the convicts path rather than his greatly desired Havisham Path. For the time being, Pip will continue to pursue Estella and try to find some way to be with Estella. However, Estella will not change and will always be pushing Pip away until one day when Pip finally realizes how he's wasted his time, he will give up.
