Pip and Estella's Realizations

Great Expectations 02 Pictures, Images and Photos

Demoralized Pip has found out that his clear path to being with Estella was imaginary.
It was never Miss Havisham's intent to see them together as adults and she is not his
benefactor. Out of nowhere, the convict from the beginning comes to Pip and tells him that all this time it has been he who has made Pip a gentleman. The Convict, expecting excitement, is instead given disappointment masked by fake enthusiasm. Through this, the convict has become a new but unwanted father figure to Pip because he has been following the convicts path rather than his greatly desired Havisham Path. For the time being, Pip will continue to pursue Estella and try to find some way to be with Estella. However, Estella will not change and will always be pushing Pip away until one day when Pip finally realizes how he's wasted his time, he will give up.

How Orlick's name describes him

Orlick doesn't care about anyone except himself and his name clearly reflects that. "...he gave me to understand that the Devil lived in a black corner of the forge, and that he knew he fiend very well: also that it was necessary to make up the fire, once in seven years, with a live boy, and that I might consider myself fuel" [Dickens 113] Here, Orlick clearly shows that he is selfish by making jokes to put a smile on his face that are clearly at Pip's expense. There is no indication in the text that he was joking or doing this in good fun. He only wanted to make Pip's life worse. And whats funny, is his name reflects his selfishness in sentence. I could imagine him saying something like "Hell if I care. You can do that ORLICK My A**!" Couldn't you?

Pip's Childhood Personality

journeyhome Pictures, Images and Photos

"...I felt fearfully sensible of the great convenience that the Hulks were handy for me. I was clearly on my way there. I had begun by asking questions, and I was going to rob Mrs. Joe" [Dickens, Great Expectations]

By the quote given above, Pip is clearly a very paranoid character. He's thinks he's gonna be a convict one day because of the small evil deed of stealing food from his sister. And even more to the point, the reason he's stealing the food is because he thinks that another convict, who was made up by the first convict, is going to kill him if he doesn't. A cleaver person could get Pip to do anything he wanted with fear. In fact, his sister does by using her cane, "tickler" to beat him when he does something wrong. And because of this fear, Pip is always trying to stay out of trouble because he thinks his sister will find out about every bad deed he does. The only reason that Pip went against his sister for the convict was because he feared the convict much more than his sister. Pip is clearly very paranoid.
